City region devolution
A pipe dream only a few years ago, devolution is rapidly gaining pace. It’s just one factor in our changing operating environment – but arguably the most significant and demanding in testing our ability to respond to our new world.
The LCR need 25,000 homes in the next 8 years across all tenures and price levels. You can’t afford not to be part of it – but if you are you have to be prepared to think and behave differently – very differently. A bold vision, an intuitive approach to taking risks and a willingness to move quickly are the qualities that will win the day.
It presents us with clear challenges – we aren’t the only game in town when it comes to housing, so we need to position ourselves to be part of the solution or risk a solution being found by others. This doesn’t mean losing our mission, our core purpose or our sovereignty; but it does mean throwing off our blinkers and bringing a fresh and dynamic approach to:
- Partnership work and relationship development
- Appetite for risk and decision making
- Market analysis and insight
- Appraising and actioning on opportunity
- Speed of delivery
The devolution partners need us to step up to the plate, both individually and more importantly collectively.
President Obama described Apple’s Steve Jobs as “brave enough to think differently, bold enough to believe he could change the world, and talented enough to do it.” – we have the talent but are we brave and bold enough for the devolved world?
